Point Counterpoint

Day 185

You probably guessed it from the thinly veiled title.  We have counters!

Here's the bathroom.

Oh yeah, they did the sinks as well.  That is a marble looking counter.  Now that the counter has been installed, they can get cracking on the tile.

Here's the kitchen from left to right.

The hole is where the dishwasher will go.  Despite the trouble getting our first choice for counter material, I think we ended up getting something that is very similar, if not the same, as what we had in there before, which is what we wanted in the first place.

That hole is for the stove.

This counter is table height (the other counters are higher) and it has a stained walnut top which will match our kitchen table that has yet to be made.  I can't wait to see what things look like when the upper cabinets go up.

More Built-Ins

Day 182

This first one is over the refrigerator.

Here's what it looks like on the inside.

And this bunch is in the great room.

We also have heat again.  It hasn't been crazy cold yet but it's good to have a thermostat again.

The Cover Up

Day 181

Not much going on today.  I think they spent the time on covering up the floor so it doesn't get scratched and then brought up a bunch of tools to get ready to work on the cabinets.

It gets dark early now so please for give the lack of focus and graininess of some of the shots.

They also installed four doors.

I'm only showing you one door because they all look the same.

Finally, the downstairs closet.

All they did was put in the poles.  That's going to be nice.  The only thing left for the closet is paint and carpet.

Colors And Smells

Day 180

Sorry no post yesterday.  I wasn't able to access the areas where stain was applied because it wasn't dry yet.  This also prevented us from using our stairs which wouldn't have been so bad except this is the first night we had rain since July!  Walking outside just to go to the bathroom downstairs was not fun.  But today we have our stairs back!

The best match for the floor color was selected and applied.

The floor is dry but the smell of the stain inhabits our house.

When the house is almost done, they will apply one more finish coat to make the floors a bit stronger.

The stairs were completely sanded but I didn't get a picture of the white wood before they stained it.

Despite the fact that it was raining, they also started working on this:

And that is going to provide the support for our old deck.

As Bob the Builder says, "Reduce, reuse, recycle."  Bob the Builder didn't mention the part about saving money.

Do You Like Brown, Brown, Brown, Or Maybe The Brown

Day 178

Not much picture that was worthy today.  They sanded the floors and stairs.

And then we found this.

I think that strip across the top is the old floor that didn't get stripped and then they were trying to get one to match.  That one on the far right wasn't even close.  The other three were close.  I think tomorrow the whole floor is going to be dark.

The Essence Of Multi-tasking.

Day 175

Lots went on today.  Things going on upstairs and downstairs.

Looks like they finished laying down the floor.

It looks like they put a coating of some sort over parts of the floor that were above existing construction, including the guestroom.

Not sure why they did the whole guest room floor but they did.

Not sure if the flooring guys rebuilt the stairs as well but it is matching material and looks much nicer than the temporary plywood that was there.

Then there was more work on the shelves in the downstairs closet.  That's looking good too.

Finally, the last of the cabinets arrived.

They are going to go upstairs in the great room but not until the floors are done.  While the floors are getting finished, we are not going to have stairs for a couple of days.  That means we are going to have to go outside and down the driveway to access the kids' room.  Fortunately, the inconvenience is only going to last for a day or two.  Then it should be all downhill from there . . . until the house starts smelling of paint!

From The Walls To The Floors

Day 174

Work continues as they did more work on the shelves.  These are in the downstairs closet.

They also reinforced some shelves in the closet.

They also installed this door on the bathroom closet.

And then the floor.  They did the guest room closet.

Finished the threshold between the hall and the guestroom.

They also started on the great room floor.

They didn't quite squeeze them together yet.  See.

They'll probably do that tomorrow.  The plan is that they are going to install the floor.  Sand some of the old floor down and then stain to match the finish.  I'm liking the way things are looking.

Into The Closet

Day 173

So today's post is going to be boring for you.  It's just closets and you can't tell where they are but for us it is exciting as we get to imaging what we are going to put in them.  Here's the run down.

This is the pantry.

The pantry actually has a counter in it.  We'll probably store some appliances there.

This is the closet that has no name.

We haven't figured out how to refer to it yet.  It is between the great room and the kitchen.

This is the the guest room closet.  It's small but it is big enough.

And finally we have the linen closet.

That looks like it will be big enough to store everything.

What Is Going Here?

Day 172

Notice something odd about these pictures?

Almost nothing is on the floor!  Except for the installed cabinets and that big pile of flooring.  I guess they are preparing to install flooring soon.  Sorry for the blurry ugly night pics.  It gets dark here early now.

Speaking of floors. . .

These are the floor tiles for the bathroom.

And speaking of tiles . . .

These are the tiles for the shower walls.  The light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger.

Everything AND The Kitchen Sink

Day 169

More cabinets were installed

Downstairs in the bathroom.

And upstairs in the kitchen.

They did the little last bit of the lower cabinets so they could measure for the counter that will be coming later (probably mid-December).

Also, the sinks arrived for both the bathroom and the kitchen.

But those don't go in until the counters are made.  They'll just be sitting around for a while.

Corner to Corner

Day 168

They continue to install the cabinets.

That small gap on the left is for the dishwasher and the hole in the front center is for the range.

They also installed this side cabinet that going to be a large table of sorts.   I'm sorry but there is not going to be a post tomorrow.  The kids and I are meeting Mika at her conference in Monterey so I'm getting them from school and hitting the road.

The Labyrinth Of Cabinets

Day 167

They have arrived!

A straggler in the opposite end of the room.

 Some drawers.

And they managed to install some today.

They will likely be done by Friday, at least the parts that the counter will cover.

Shelving The Idea Of Shelves

Day 166

They started on the shelves.

Here they are.

And this is where they will go in the pantry.

They also started on the downstairs closet.

And the bathroom closet.

But all that gets put on hold. For on the morrow the kitchen cabinets shall arrive!  That takes priority because they have to install them and then get templates made for the counter tops.  It'll take a few weeks for the counter to get made so that needs to be done posthaste!

Oh, and there is this.

 The floor!
